UK Sovereign AI: can it move fast enough to create economic value for all?

UK Sovereign AI: can it move fast enough to create economic value for all?

I came across the Centre for British Progress and am inspired for what they are trying to achieve. Many of its goals align perfectly with my beliefs, ethics and ambitions for the UK. Of the many subjects written about, Sovereign AI, AI’s impact on society and how can we keep UK AI founders in the UK are top of my agenda.

Today askelie® launched the most advanced and sustainable platform in the creation of the next generation, ground up AI based solutions.

The askelie® platform fills a significant gap in the UK Sovereign AI strategy that can speed up the time to create economic value and significantly reduce the electricity and water we use in creating the next generation AI applications.

Segments of the UK Sovereign AI strategy

Above we can see the segments of the UK Sovereign AI strategy.

It is important to build the foundations levels and £100's of millions are being pumped into the key foundation stage. However, let us be realistic, NVIDIA, Open AI, Google & Anthropic took years and spent many billions bringing to market foundation capabilities to the globe.

But now we to need connect the foundation capabilities to economic benefit for all, not just the shareholders of the foundation suppliers.

There is a clear gap to connecting the foundation models to economic output. This is not just a UK problem, but how does the UK government take advantage of these foundation features and drive economic benefit.

One way is to use the foundations and recreate next generation applications. The foundations are an important part of the picture but they won’t run real life production capability.

Users will use code generators to produce product code. Most of these that I have seen cannot provide production grade applications. This means hundreds of users connecting to foundation models, creating the same basic application footprint. Our experience and the established principles of software reuse suggest that, with the right architecture, perhaps 60-80% of an enterprise application's underlying capability can be provided as reusable platform functionality, leaving the remaining layer to be configured around the organisation's specific processes, knowledge and business logic. Analytics is now largely commoditised. The value is no longer in building the analytics capability itself, but in applying it to the right data, knowledge and business context.

Do we have any idea of the amount of resources wasted on creating business applications: the human effort, electricity and water that is required to replicate the same 65% of code used in most vertical applications and the effect on the environment that these capabilities generate. While AI coding tools are making it easier to generate software, askelie® takes a different approach: we provide the production-grade platform and let users configure the application they need. This makes it practical and affordable to create trusted enterprise AI applications at speed, with a single digital worker capable of being configured to support hundreds of use cases.

Many code generators are based on US technology and there is a danger that the important priority of having UK Sovereign AI will be defeated and weakened if we then insert US capability in-between.

What has changed? AI has now given us the ability to automate that 35% difference in constructing an AI command driven application. We no longer need the Vertical GUI’s, the vertical business logic is now intelligent AI.

The platform askelie® has been designed to create the next generation of AI command driven applications, but uniquely it does this by configuration of reusable core components, leaving users free to add the process, business logic and AI knowledge base data. Then it is ready to go into production. We have 8 AI based applications in the market already.

So, from the perspective of the UK AI capability, as underpinned by the thinking of the Centre for British Progress, askelie® is valuable because:

  • Is a UK innovation
  • It fills a clear gap in the UK Sovereign AI strategy
  • It allows Government departments to access AI technology & automation faster, cheaper and be more compliant
  • It will enable UK companies to build the next generation apps, owning they IP they create, thus enabling more people in the UK into AI employment
  • It will significantly reduce energy and water consumption, by recycling vital components that form the core of the application, not more burning tokens or data centre resources

As for the other concerns of AI for the Centre of British Progress:

  • How do we replace lost jobs due to the impact of AI: this topic needs more research, however making askelie® available to UK entrepreneurs would enable the creation of more start-ups in AI field and in turn more employment
  • Access to the askelie®’s platform will protect UK founded SaaS companies against the incoming attack by US based AI companies. All legacy SaaS apps will be targeted by new AI replacements. The askelie® platform will provide a natural evolution into an agentic app
  • I am a UK AI founder who passionately believes that askelie® ground breaking technology should benefit the UK economy and workforce. The askelie® technology is proven and working but needs more investment to become a global leader.
